In Uzbekistan, it is planned to increase the volume of construction to 280 thousand apartments per year.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on introducing new approaches to urbanisation and housing construction, the presidential press service reports.

It was noted that over the past 8 years, 120 million square metres of housing — more than 600,000 houses and apartments — have been built and commissioned to meet citizens’ housing needs. To support home purchases, 541,000 citizens received preferential mortgage loans and subsidies totalling 103 trillion soums. The urbanisation rate increased from 40.3% in 1991 to 51%.

However, the head of state stressed that the work done is still insufficient. Around 200,000 new families are formed annually in the republic, which means further growth in demand for new housing, roads and social infrastructure.

Currently, the average living space per person is 18.9 sq. m. In order to increase this figure to at least 23 sq. m by 2040, it is necessary to raise the pace of new housing construction to 280,000 apartments per year.

For this purpose, urbanisation management has been reorganised based on a new system, and a separate committee has been established to gradually increase housing construction volumes. In particular, plans include building 140,000 apartments in 2026, 150,000 in 2027 and 160,000 in 2028.

The presentation also paid special attention to the efficient use of land resources. According to international organisations, uncontrolled expansion of settlements in some regions could lead to a shortage of agricultural land in the future.

In this regard, it was noted that outdated housing stock should be renewed and the share of renovation increased. It is planned to raise the renovation share from the current 15% to 60% by 2040 and expand the number of “New Uzbekistan” residential areas to 120.
